The urban core of a Biosphere Eco-City and its surrounding rural area depend on each other. Services, information and other benefits flow out from the core. Food, recreational opportunities, clean air and water, and other natural resources are provided by the rural area. Parts of the natural ecosystems in the rural areas are also present in the urban core. But pressures of urban activities can damage natural and even human conditions in the rural area. For this reason, Biosphere Eco-City projects are developed to further cooperation between urban and rural areas. This allows the benefits of sustainability to be shared between the core and countryside areas of a Biosphere Eco-City.
Future Watch (futurewatch.ca) is a Toronto organization dedicated to Environment and Development Education. It developed Toronto BEC (TBEC) as one of its projects. Future Watch members have participated in all TBEC projects. Toronto BEC owes Future Watch a great deal of gratitude.
